THE 2010 SEASON

The 2010 season is approaching very fast, the first race will start in Bahrain on 14th March. The experts are reckoning it to be one of the most exciting season in the history of the Formula 1 because of a number of changes made. Formula 1 is one of the most expensive and the most watched sport in the world. The reason why the FIA (governing body) made these radical changes is to make the glamorous sport more exciting and encourage drivers to do their utmost to try to win races. Let's have a look at the changes which we will witness in the 19 races of the season.

1. REFUELLING BAN:
For the first time since 1993, the cars must start with a full fuel tank which will last the entire race. Previously the cars used to have a fuel tank with a capacity of 80 litres but this year the car fuel tank will have a capacity of around 250 litres. Because of which the wheelbase this year will also be longer then the previous years cars.

2. POINTS:
The point system has been revised. The winner of the race will get 25 points instead of 10. The format of the new point scoring system is 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

3. TYRES:
The front tyres will be narrower. The tyre compound will harder to compensate the weight of the car. The wheel rim cover, which was used by many teams in 2009 are not allowed.

4. KERS:
The Kinetic Energy Recovery System which is commonly known as KERS will not be used by any team this season. Last season we saw that the teams having KERS were either at advantage or disadvantage at various tracks, so the teams have decided not to use the KERS systems this year.

5. TESTING:
In season testing remains banned but the new regulations allows teams to test a replacement driver if he hasn't raced in a grand prix in the previous two year.

6. STEWARDS:
Experienced former F1 driver, will form part of the steward's panel.

  3. Interesting information on 2010 F1 season. However I have some questions for you.Why is the points system the way it is i.e. 25-18-15-12 etc.? Why is the wheel rim cover not allowed?......:P but it is a good practice that the F1 has adopted in terms of testing a replacement driver and having a former F1 driver in the steward's panel.

  4. Rabia you have made some really good questions. Everyone's free to ask any kind of question relating to F1. Your first question is about the points system. The reason of giving 7 points margin to the race winner is to give him a clear advantage over the runner up. Previously the race winner just had a 2 point advantage over the runner up as the points system was like 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. The debate started in 2008 season when Felipe Massa won more races than Lewis Hamilton(the driver who was crowned champion that year), a lot of people said that Lewis is not a worthy champ. For this reason they are giving a clear advantage to the race winner. More over the number of teams have been increased this season, this season 11 teams will participate. 3 more teams are added which means there will be 6 more cars on the track and the first 10 drivers will be awarded the points(previously first 8 drivers were awarded points). The second question was about the wheel rim covers. Tires play a very important role in F1. The Wheel Rim covers were used to to heat the rims so that so that the tire can reach the required temperature earlier, this made the job of the driver very easy. For making things difficult for the drivers the FIA has banned them.

  5. Thanks for providing all the information on the changes in the 2010 season. I am looking forward to this exciting and unpredictable season.
By the way don't you think that due to the refueling ban, all the teams will be on the same strategy which will make the sport boring?

  6. Yeah strategy will not be as important as it used to be in the previous seasons.
But the drivers will have to keep the tires in proper shape because the team will have to decide when to call the driver to pit in for a tire change so, there will be a little bit of strategy involved.

  9. yes thats why everyone's predicting that 4 or 5 teams will fight for the title this season

  10. And which teams will those be competing for the title....any existing ones or should we be expecting new ones not heard of yet?

  11. The new teams will need alot of time to develop their cars. The teams that will fight for the championship are Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, Mclaren and the Mercedes GP. Each team has two drivers which means that there might be eight drivers who will fight for the driver's championship. Its going to be an epic season.
